EXCLUSIVE: Rake co-creator Peter Duncan is standing firm behind the fifth and final season of the ABC drama amid media reports he had apologised to viewers. Yesterday the Daily Telegraph suggested Duncan had apologised to viewers who had not warmed to Cleaver Greene’s (Richard Roxburgh) shift from Sydney lawyer to Canberra independent senator. Rake is finally over. The final season started off slow and weak. However, it picked up quick and ended in a good way. The writing was clever and managed to let Cleaver go out on a high note. The ending felt a little rushed, but I was ultimately very satisfied with it.

'Rake' is the fourth Fox show canceled on Wednesday.

The Greg Kinnear vehicle was cut shortly after after the cancelation of 'Dads,' 'Enlisted' and 'Surviving Jack.'

While the network would not officially confirm that the show was canceled, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap that two of the leads have been let out of their contracts, signaling the cancellation.

'Rake' had been struggling ever since it's soft January premiere, which drew a 1.7 rating in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic. The show was moved to Fridays in March, where it did so poorly that the finale was actually shifted to a Saturday night in favor of 'Kitchen Nightmares' reruns.

It's been a busy half-week for Fox thus far. On Monday, the network ordered 'Gotham' to series. On Tuesday, it ordered 'Empire' and 'Red Band Society' to series, later upping the 'Mulaney' order by 10 episodes.

Overview

After an acclaimed company debut conducting the Met premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin in 2016, Susanna Mälkki returns to lead Stravinsky’s neoclassical dark comedy. Young star tenor Ben Bliss is the cad Tom Rakewell, alongside soprano Golda Schultz as the virtuous Anne Trulove and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the diabolical Nick Shadow. Jonathan Miller’s surreal production, last seen on the Met stage in 2015, also features mezzo-soprano Alice Coote as Baba the Turk and bass James Creswell as Anne’s father, Trulove.
